Mavis Gallant was born in Montreal and worked as a journalist at the Montreal Standard before moving to Europe to devote herself to writing fiction. I bought this book after reading a review of it a few years ago. Enjoy the fact that it is linked short stories so you have the same characters at different stages of their lives. The lives are very unlike what you would find today. Her prose is effortlessly and unaffectedly flawless . she reminds me a bit of Alice Munro.
Sometimes Gallant is simply astonishing in the power of her imagery, such as when she likened the demolition of an old, gloomy elementary school to "the burial of a witch".You can't go wrong with this volume of stories, some of which will stay with you forever. I promise.
I expected more of these. They are OK, but not terrifically engrossing. Not my favorites. Probably will not finish them.
