This book is beautiful and up to date! It does not replace a Lonely Planet or Fodors travel guide with all the information that they have. This book does not have the usual hotel, dining, etc information, but does have different ideas of things to do and places to see. It is interesting and a good addition to the basic books.
This book was a disappointment. The Istanbul section did not provide any information other guidebooks hadn't already told us, and the section on Western Turkey was often misleading and took us to places we would normally avoid. Now we know that when National Geographic says somewhere is "lively," it really means it's a night-clubbers paradise with non-stop ear-piercing music blaring out of every orifice catering to drunk European holiday-seekers. Sigh. It was not quite the real Turkey we came to see. The book had great photos, but did not have enough detailed information to warrant buying it.Here's a tip for Istanbul. Avoid Topkapi Palace. It's expensive and a let down. Spend your time at Hagia Sophia instead - an architectural wonder.P.S. Renting a car in Turkey and driving from Istanbul to the Mediterranean coast is insanity. You will encounter whole families on a scooter without helmets, garbage trucks trying to pass you on a blind curve cliff road going uphill, 10 year olds on motorcycles driving the wrong way into heavy traffic - again without helmets, cars speeding around you on the left when you've signaled you're turning left, and overloaded trucks tipping over as they go around a bend in the road. Even walking on a sidewalk, you may have to avoid speeding motorcycles, cars doing U-turns and scooters barreling down the sidewalk after dark with their lights off.
Educational and a great read. Beautiful pics. Its not as focused on places to eat, but I learned a lot.
