As described by many other reivewers, this book is great for San Francisco - it really breaks down the city and offers information to please most all visitors. However, they should not have listed Northern California as part of the title at all. The non-S.F. portion of the book is less than 50 pages and not enough to help anyone wanting to visit those areas.I'm a Bay Area local presently living in Marin (Marin is the area on the North side of the Golden Gate bridge). I know the greater bay area pretty well and we travel around Northern California often. I was very, very disappointed by the incredible lack of useful information for areas of interest outside the city of S.F. If you are interested in Marin, for example, the information wasn't even close to giving you a fun experience and the restaurant & things to do recommendations are lacking. Same goes for anything further North, the South bay, Santa Cruz and Monterey. If you plan to just visit the city of S.F., then this is a great resource. However, if you are hoping for a bit more information about the greater S.F. Bay area in order to expand your area of exploration, this book will not give you what you need. Unfortunately, the larger DK California won't either, as most of that book is focusing on S.F. and L.A. (Both DK books are VERY city focused with limited information on smaller, natural or other attractions outside of the big urban areas). If you want good information on the areas outside of the big cities, such as the towns and attractions of Marin County, Sonoma County (where Napa is located...), The Northern coast areas around Mendocino, or South of S.F. such as Santa Cruz, Monterey, and/or beyond I highly recommend the Frommers California book: Frommer's California 2012 (Frommer's Colour Complete) It highlights most all the interesting things in the various areas I've mentioned, and the lodging and restaurant recommendations are pretty right on (but of course it always pays to check out tripadvisor and yelp...).From the perspective of a local, the Frommers California book is far superior, unless your intention is to just visit the city.Happy CA travels!

I always like DK Eyewitness Travel guides and this one is no exception. The detail and the illustrations make this the best SFO guide I've found. I will be happy when DK begins to offer their books in an electronic format for my phone or Kindle.

I used this to plan my family trip to San Francisco just a few weeks ago and it was SO useful!I've always enjoyed the Eyewitness books because of the wonderful color photo's and descriptions. This book is no different! I like to see pictures of travel destinations because it's helps to find and recognize it once I'm there. The book has all the information I needed to plan out our 9 day trip.It has a section of hotels, restaurants and stores, but being that there are literally TONS of them in SF, the book does not cover them all. It did give a great overview of the ones listed though.I will always look to the Eyewitness Travel books for other travel adventures!

If I am buying travel guides for a trip, I always include an Eyewitness Travel Book. The San Francisco Eyewitness book did not disappoint. Other travel guides may contain more reviews of restaurants, hotels and attractions, but the Eyewitness books give you a visual preview of the what you will want to see and do. The highest quality photographs and illustrations bring the traveler back to these guides throughout the trip. Although the Eyewitness Books are a bit too heavy to carry in a purse all day, they come along in the suitcase or carryon bag. Each day's planning includes a study from the guide.

Like the many other volumes in the DK Eyewitness series that I have taken to cities here and abroad, this guide is compact and very easy to use. Maps are clear and supplemented with "3-D" drawings of prominent areas and famous neighborhoods. Descriptions of museums, architectural features, points of historical importance are accurate and usually accompanied with maps highlighting notable items. In addition, the guide gives plenty of details about the Bay Area and territory north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Historical notes and practical info on transportation, food, shopping are nicely illustrated (often with vintage photos and good charts) and meet the high standard of this series. Best to check on-line, however, for latest info on hours of stores, museums, entrance fees, special exhibits.

DK Eyewitness travel books are some of the best on the market. You can glean more information from one of their books than you can from reading several offerings from their competitors. The full-color visuals, the detailed maps, and the interesting side-bars all add up to making this guide a perfect companion when planning a trip. If you're actually going on vacation, or simply dreaming of far-away places, this is the travel series for you.

A terrific guide to SF! I read every page and stayed and ate based on the referrals in this book. You cannot go wrong and will find this book the best guide to SF.I would buy a DK Eyewitness Travel Guide again and would recommend it to anyone planning a trip to N. California.

I love these books. I have not been disappointed by any of them. Even if you do not have money to travel. You can travel from your couch.
