I expected traditional atlas information about topography, climate, population, and locations of cities, states, countries and other political subdivisions. The NGGA tries to reinvent what an atlas does. It contains interesting information, but not information in which I have any particular interest. The maps themsevles are not detailed enough. The effort to reinvent itself comes off as contrived and it doesn't do just to the traditional atlas.
We purchased this atlas hoping for something current and informative, and this atlas definitely delivered. The maps are excellent, the information current, and the graphs and texts are relevant. We were pleasantly surprised by an area featuring flag, population, and statistics for most countries. The only downfall we've seen so far is that a few of the maps "disappear" into the fold of the book, but not many, and not very much of the maps.All in all, we are very happy with the quality and content of this atlas, especially for the price. Excellent buy!
beautiful atlas, very helpfulwe found a small mistake on page 118: the 3 Baltic countries - (north to south order) Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania are printed in the wrong order - (North to south direction) Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia.on page 119 the order is OK, but on page 118 not...
Very nice atlas, with brief almanac-like data on each country (population, square miles, average income, etc.). This has been a great resource to have to put international news into perspective, and to update my knowledge. The world has changed since I first learned geography in junior high school! Some maps are printed across 2 pages, and the page-break sections are not easy to read.
Just exactly what we wanted! The organization is what sets this atlas apart. Others combine topographic, informational and geographic maps in the same section so it's impossible to look up, say, two neighboring countries on separate pages. The pages are continuously numbered, so you can find anything by checking the index. Plenty of detail, up-to-date, interesting in its statistical sections, the right size for under the coffee table--every household should have one!
ONLY THING IS....I really am thrilled with this atlas! It is very easy to use in that it is medium-sized and not too heavy to lift yet not too small to see. It has a moderate number of maps (an expert might like more and larger with more detail), a wonderful section on World Thematics and a wonderful Appendix. There are a lot of fun facts.The only negative is that a big corner of the first page was accidentally folded down during shipping.Other than that, it looks great on the coffee table when I am not perusing it.
My husband loves maps, and has never had a World Atlas. So I was trying to think what he would like, we are older and retired and not much that we need that we don't already have. So I was doing something and looked up and he was checking out the location of a new story. and the light went on, I gave him the Atlas yesterday and He is enjoying it very much. I would say it was a winner.
I bought this for my 8th grade daughter, who loves maps and geography. She loves everything about it, and is frequently found reading it. Lots of information, and perfect for someone who loves to delve into details and learn a broad amount of basic info about different places in the world. Photos are top-notch. I'm sure by college she'll upgrade to a higher end atlas, but this one is worth having on its own.
