I would have given this 5 stars except that the book has dozens of typos which completely contradict each other. For instance one page will say a particular photo is from 1873, two pages later it will say it's 1883. These are just some arbitrary dates I used for the scenario. Seriously there are enough conflicting things like this that I felt like contacting the editor. As harsh as that sounds, this book is absolutely an excellent tool for genealogists and amateur archaeologists. Thanks to this guide I was able to set a date range for many historical photographs I found to get a fuller picture of the past on an archaeology site I researched in Arkansas, as well as get an A in my advanced methods in archaeology course at MSU.

I've purchased a couple of books on dating 19th century photographs and looked at many more and this one is by far the best. After a very short history of Carte de Visite's (CDV) and Cabinet Card photos, the majority of the book gives you clues in an orderly manner to date your photo. An example, for CDVs look first at thickness, then borders, corners, imprint, size, stamps, clothes,& studio, and the book explains in good depth what to look for under each heading. This book makes it easy to be accurate within just a few years. There are numerous charts and even a checklist for Carte de visites. It's just as informative for Cabinet Cards. Highly recommended.

This is an EXCELLENT book for anyone that collects any era of antique photographs. I personally collect postmortem CDV photos of babies & young children. I know, I know. It may sound gruesome and some times it is. However, the Victorians had a different relationship with death which claimed as many as 40% of all children before the age of 5. This book addresses all areas of collecting and provides invaluable information to placing dates on these little gems that tell us so much about who we used to be. A must have book for the collector.

I have a huge collection on family photographs, including many very early photo. I've always had trouble dating them as images like tintypes and cabinet cards were used over a long period of time. Some photographs have cryptic notations such as Grandma Burnham. Thanks to these books by Gary, I can narrow down the date and estimate the persons age to help identify 'which' grandma Burnham this individual might be. So happy!

As a photo historian it's always difficult to lecture about dating photo types and especially their formats without bringing in lots of originals and resources, many of which I've written up myself for easy use. This book has it all! There are other books out there that cover this, but not as clearly or succinctly or thoroughly. If you work with historic photographs in any way and need information based upon them, this book will be a great tool.

I would recommend this book for anyone who has a beginning interest in the history of 19th Century photographs. This is far better than a similar book I had previously purchased by a different author. The substance is excellent. As an aside, because I was at one time an English teacher, the publisher needs to hire a proof reader or at least a different one. There is a surprising amount of typos, incorrect words and missing words. In spite of the poor proof reading, I found the book to be very worth while.

This is a great book to help date old photos! Impressed that not only do they talk about clothing, but the cards themselves, according to borders, colors, the back of the cards and fonts used for the photographers' names. For anyone who has old photos this is a must!

I have a collection of Cabinet Cards and this book helped me learn a lot about them. There is ton of information and photos. You can date the photos by paper printed on, type of edging on card, is the printers name embellished or plain, the color of the card. Also pictures of the styles of hair and clothing help identify the age. I highly recommend this book which is truly a quick guide.

This book was disappointing, much like Tanner's other book ("How to Build A High-Performance Mazda Miata MX-5") -- mostly because neither is really a "how-to" for performance modifications. The book titled "How To" begins with the disclaimer that it is not a "how-to," but rather a book about design philosophy and parts selection, and this book mostly discusses regular maintenance items. I don't consider an oil change or transmission fluid change a "performance project," but rather a simple maintenance item that I would expect to see in a Haynes manual, not a book about performance projects. The few actual performance mods discussed in this book (swapping heads, installing a limited slip differential and a few others) are addressed in such a brief manner, and with so few pictures, that the book isn't much of a help -- you will need other resources unless you are very experienced. If you're alright with a book that discusses mostly regular "tune-up" procedures, this works. What it isn't is an effective guide for how to really eke some extra performance out of your Miata.

This book has a lot of fun projects for the home mechanic but the detail leaves a lot to be desired. If you want a step by step guide then don't buy this, go with a chilton manual instead. However, if you just need a broad overview of the job and a few color pictures then this is the book for you. Also the quick facts box at the beginning of each project is nice touch. It tells you what you need, the projected time and cost, and the recomended skill level.

I have completed nearly half of the project in the book with great success. Instructions are usually right on and he makes upgrades and maintenance accessible to this amature mechanic.HOWEVER, for the 2002 Miata NB, the information about the rear brakes is woefully inadequate. There is an adjustment screw in the rear brakes that the book mentions only in passing with little explanation as to what it is for. After and hour of nearly destroying my calipers trying to get the pistons back into them, I went online and found that the adjustment screw is of vital importance when changing the brakes of the Miata LS. You must back the screw out and the piston follows. If he had just put that simple sentence into the book I would have completed my driveway brake job in an hour without the additional stress and time.

I have another Performance Projects book for a 1995 M3, and it's paper and photos are crisp and clear.This book however, the paper is cheap, the printing is bad ( some headlines bleed over into the next line making it impossible to read, some colored backgrounds don't go down far enough creating an ugly look ) , and the photos are blurry. It looks like it was printed at home on cheap office max paper.The content is good, but the delivery really sucks, I'm really disappointed in Motorbooks

This is a really helpful book. If you are experienced in auto repair, the book provides very useful information to help you do the work much quicker. If you are new to repair, you may need a Haynes/Chilton or similar manual to help fill in some details.The book is well organized, clear, and well written. I used it to help replace a cylinder head, and replace a the convertible top. In both cases I found specific sections within the book to help me do the work. Well worth the cost of the book.

Well written and full of good ideas. Bought the other Tanner book, How to Build a High Performance Miata. Between the two books you get theory and application.

PROS:This projects book is helpful for the beginner mechanic. I'm no expert, so I can't speak for experienced mechanics. It has helped me locate various parts on the car and give me ideas for future projects.The build quality of the book is very sturdy. Pictures are large and clear.CONS:More detail could be provided for each specific project. However, the book does a good job of getting you started and understanding the purpose of your project.

The Miata is a great car off the lot, but everyone has different ideas of perfection and the canvas that the Miata provides is perfect for people to create their own vision of automotive perfection. As an autocross racer I'm obviously biased toward performance rather than comfort, and with the help of this book, I've been able to modify my car (and maintain it) to the point where I'm winning at the races. A good purchase, it's saved me hundreds in maintenance fees by being able to do the work myself. Well worth the money!
