About the Author

Born in 1971, Isambard Wilkinson has travelled in Pakistan since leaving school. A former foreign correspondent for the Daily Telegraph and the Economist based in Pakistan and Spain, he has also worked on assignment in other countries including Algeria, Palestine, Israel, Iraq, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan. He has lived for periods in France, Spain, Hong Kong and Hungary, and his travels abroad have been interrupted twice by kidney failure, enabling him to take time off to recuperate with his grandmother in the Irish countryside, which is home.

From feuding household employees, to his grandmother's life-long friend in Lahore, from the wilds of Baluchistan to sufi shrines galore, the author lets the beauty of the landscape and the Pakistanis he met tell the story, all with humour and insight. By neglecting to make himself the sole focus, the author offers something new and original to the body of published work about one of the most fascinating countries in the world.

I don’t often read travel books – but I’m glad I read this one. And soon, it was hard to avoid making comparisons with Eric Newby, Fitzroy Maclean and John Masters. But why bother? Bard Wilkinson, so different to them, I’d hazard a guess, and wise beyond his years, has his own distinctive style; perceptive, calm, compelling, great humanity and an engaging absence of ego.One is immediately drawn into why this part of the world got into his blood during his youth – and remains there. Later, he returns as foreign correspondent for The Daily Telegraph. His brushwork describing sensory aspects such as sights, sounds and smells, is richly hued. Moreover, passages about places, Chitral in particular, a visually stunning part of northern Pakistan, and some of the characters he encounters, are both fascinating and enchanting. (The redoubtable Wilfred Thesiger wrote that an aspect of Chitral was ‘probably the finest view I had ever seen in my life’.) The author describes much that, to my surprise, still exists as I had seen it as a mere passer-by in 1970 – though tragically the relentless encroachment of toxic political and religious influences now threaten to extinguish the magic of its diversity and tolerance.As foreign correspondent, he inevitably is witness to scenes that are savage, vivid and shocking. Nevertheless, he distances his cameos from hyperbole and melodrama. I think this is part of the author’s innate modesty and courage; there is no doubt that some of his experiences involved great risk. If you went looking for serious trouble in his bailiwick at the time, it wouldn’t take you long to find it. Well, it was often his job. And sometimes this also involved interviewing some quite nasty people.Again, he characteristically skates over the dangers of a stint in Afghanistan which terminates in a military hospital in Camp Bastion, Helmand province, due to a daunting illness which had plagued him for years. (Whilst there, he witnessed an ungrateful Taliban patient running amok ‘trying to kill the first person at hand’.)I was impressed by the author’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the region’s history, culture, traditions, and personalities – which, quite apart from anything else, makes this a must-read for those requiring invaluable insights in the region and some of its personalities.I read this nicely crafted and poignant book with a mix of nostalgia, envy and respect, feeling rather sad to reach the final full-stop. It is surely delightful and enthralling reading for anyone interested in travel in a way rarely done today.

I'm not really fond of love stories, because they seldom match with reality. However, this book set against the background of 19th century Fiji, by then an island group with tribal rules, is a very wonderful exception. I enjoyed every minute reading it and I felt sorry when I finished the book. I liked the way the authors handle the fierce and violent tribal rules, where even cannibalism is common.I loved the struggle between the two leading characters, who love one another but don't dare to admit it.Although the book is sometimes a little predictable, it kept me reading on and on and as said before I enjoyed it till the last page.I can't tell if the historical setting of the book is right, but the way the characters try to overcome their prejudices and admit they are in love is nice to read.When this would have been a real book and not a Kindle edition I certainly would have looked at the end to see if it has a "fairy-tale" "and they lived happily ever after" ending.

A love story is a part of the struggle and a key to why Nathan does what he does, putting his life on the line for the good of the natives and Susannah.The prose and the background are so enjoyable that the reader will feel the drums, follow the action, and feel for the natives with waiting eyes. It is a short read of a long narrative, well done.

Ever since I read the Mutiny on the Bounty Trilogy as a teen, I have been drawn to exotic stories about the South Pacific. Fiji immediately drew my interest and I was more than pleased with this fascinating novel.If you like your stories straight up, told like it really was, and without any sugar coating, then Fiji is sure to please. This novel transcends gender and will appeal to both male and female readers. The characters in the story fascinated me, evolving and adapting to their circumstances and surroundings. The underlying romance that weaves itself through the story is beautifully written and credible as the couple move from intense dislike to meaningful love.This book had a bit of everything - sex, violence, humor, historic detail, and plenty of twists to keep one reading. A warning for all readers - in keeping with the authentic tone throughout, you will come across scenes of ritualistic slaughter and cannibalism. A fabulous novel, beautiful for its blunt rawness, exotic scenery, and fascinating storyline. Definitely one to pick up and read. The Kindle version is less than a dollar! A quality book for sure!

Add sex, violence, strange rituals and cannibalism to the mix...and the authors have written a thrilling page-turner that will leave you wanting more!

Arthur Parkinson trained at the Royal Botanical Gardens of Kew, before working for Sarah Raven at Perch Hill, East Sussex. He is now head gardener at the Emma Bridgewater Factory garden. His garden has been featured in The Guardian, Garden News, Gardenista and Staffordshire Life. Emma Bridgewater founded her ceramics company in 1985 when she realized there was a gap in the market for beautiful, practical pottery.
