Authored by master landscape painter, Ken Salaz, "Landscapes in Oil" is an absolute must for the beginning - professional painter alike. By covering essential aspects as composition, lighting, subject choice, and paint application, Salaz allows his reader the idea that there is truly more to landscape painting than producing outdoor paintings. The author makes you realize that in order to become a competent landscape painter in the classical tradition one must learn about what you are painting. Become one with nature. Also assembled is an excellent collection of work by top contemporary landscape painters. Ken Salaz's work serves the artist on many fronts. You will not regret buying this book - make it a part of your art library. A+

I haven't read it all yet, so this is a preliminary review that I will revise later, but just to let others know that if you're thinking about getting it, just go ahead and do it. This beautiful book covers the things that you would expect, composition, palette(s), styles, perspective, and has lots of great images. One unfortunate thing is that at least one image is printed 2-3 value steps too dark. Perhaps it's just my copy, but McGurl's Eagle Lake image was printed too dark, causing the beauty and subtlety of the image to be obscured. Regardless, the book is definitely recommended.

I have so many books on painting and this is by far the best one. Ken goes over so many techniques that the Hudson River School uses that have been elusive for some time. I highly recommend this book.

An excellent book on landscape art, Ken really has covered it all and this is worth every penny and then some.

Just got the book today. Don’t have the time to read from page to page yet. I just browsed through the pages looking at the overall and images. First impression, it’s a splendid book. Landscape painters (beginners or professionals), go and get a copy. You won’t regret it.

Is this book for you? Let me state some questions, each one a little harder than the last. Is your child under the age of 6? If yes, then this book will probably work, if older, I'd really suggest a book for older kids. Are you at your wits end with the yelling, fighting at every turn and constant nagging to get simple things done with your child? If yes, then maybe this book IS for you. Have you noticed your current parenting methods are simply not working? If yes, then possibly, this book is for you. Lastly, the hardest question of all, are you willing to admit that you are most likely the biggest part of the problem with your child's misbehavior? If you can answer this question yes, then this book WILL work for you. But it does require you to dig deep and examine your own past, your own feelings, and your own problems and accept and work to fix them before your child will ever respond to these practices in the book.A little background on us: I have been struggling with my 2 year old daughter. She is very high needs, she is very stubborn and extremely intelligent. Add her constantly not feeling well from ear infections and eventually a perforated ear drum from tube malfunction, she was just rotten. A few months ago we were headed down an awful road. Tantrums every night, timeouts, me frustrated and angry and feeling like I've been through a war every night after she finally went to sleep. I cried everyday, I loved her but nothing was working, I didn't want to be THAT parent that broke her spirit but she wasn't listening to anything I said, she was getting violent, throwing things, hitting, just all around angry. I started reading this book out of sheer desperation, I was lost and felt completely alone and the ultimate failure. In the few weeks I've started the practices in this book, both Lise and I have done a 180. The tantrums are few and far between, and when they are there, they are short and very manageable. Lise has become affectionate with both her daddy and I. She freely gives kisses and hugs when before she refused any affection. She listens to what I say, she has started playing by herself and not demanding my attention 24/7. It's crazy and wonderful, I understand her feelings better and she's getting better at expressing whats going on and even more, handling her emotions and working through them herself. I just can't say enough, time outs, spanking all that is completely gone in our house. Even the word NO is very rarely used. Lise has started understanding and respecting our limits with little to no toddler stubbornness. She wants to make us happy and I can literally see the confidence building in her. Things aren't perfect, but they are absolutely better. At first reading this book, I was like um, no, there is no way that this could work. My wild child will walk all over me when I start this so called "love" parenting. But as I mentioned, I was desperate. I didn't want to spank her, I didn't want to drag her kicking and screaming to timeout, I didn't want to isolate her or be constantly telling her no she can't do that, no she can't do this, no, no, no. I knew deep down what I was doing wasn't right regardless of what family members suggested based on their experiences. They told me to come down hard on her now or she will only get worse. I was angry, she was angry, we both had no idea what to expect from each other that day, so we both went into the day guarded and short tempered. I knew I loved her dearly, and I tried my best to try the old school parenting practices with her but it was only making her worse. Yes, she listened most of the time based on threats when we were out in public or at someones house, but I now know that was only because I was humiliating her and would've done it further by spanking her or forcing timeout in front of people she simply wanted to interact with. I know what you are thinking, she is only 2, 2 year olds don't think on that level, but mine does. I can't speak for yours. Once I'd bring her home, the "old school" practices would break down, and I would be forced to yell, time out, and spank. Tantrums would be hours long, kicking, screaming (screaming on both of our parts) and hitting. The child lived in time out. It simply wasn't working. I was desperate for any alternative, and i thought, well, she is already unmanageable, what more could this do...So I started doing little things as I read them in the book. Before I was even done, I saw changes in her. Dramatic changes. I'm currently on my second round reading it. She wants to listen to us, yes she is a toddler, but often with a simple compromise, or a promise (that is ALWAYS kept on my part) to come back when time allows for whatever activity she is involved in, we can get through just about anything without screaming, or acting like a wild child. We understand each other so much better, we talk, we laugh, we have a blast together...I look forward to continuing this peaceful approach for the rest of her life. I'm sure there will be breakdowns, yelling, but I'm confident that we can work through just about anything together.

Like my father and his father before him, I was an angry dad. Like my wife's mother and grandmother, my wife was controlling and touchy. Our three kids (13, 11, & 9) were inflicted with our poor parenting and things were getting worse. After a dramatic event at home, I sought knowledge. I found Dr. Markham's blog and read and read and read some more. My wife and I sought out a good counselor to speak with. And I bought this excellent book. Three months later, we have peace in our houme. We are now better parents and getting better all the time. The book sits on my nightstand and even just reading the cover is a comfort and a guide. Stop yelling. Start connecting. It is a JOY.Thank you so much Dr. Markham.Thank you.Thank you.

This book is eveything I ever hoped for. I grew up in a household where I was constantly yelled at for discipline. As a child, I early on started yelling back at my parents and always hated it, wanting to stop and not knowing how. Then as a parent I saw myself yelling at my daughter, not knowing what to do. I texted a friend asking for a good recommendation on a parenting book and she immediately recommended this one. From there my life has completely changed. Within months I was able to go from yelling multiple times a day to yelling maybe once a month (and forgiving myself for the slip-ups!). I love parenting. I'm constantly connecting with my daughter and really seeing the joys of raising a child. I went from dreading parenting to enjoying being a stay-at-home mom. My daughter (at 2) can now begin to solve her own problems with gentle guidance. She pinpoints her emotions and is empathetic when I feel sad or frustrated as well. What I adore is that the book is based on studies, not just the author's opinion. As I studied Human Development in college, this really appeals to my science-minded mentality. I am so thankful I was recommended this book when my daughter was still very young. My whole family is more peaceful and happier. I cannot even express in words the difference this book made in loving and caring for my child and in loving myself. I only hope it can help your family as much as it helped mine.

100% changed my parenting style and improved my children's behavior immediately. I wish I would have read this earlier.....

My book was defective. And I read not even half of it- it was so boring, repetitive, and basically states that our children’s “bad” behavior is ok. It’s not ok- although I do agree on showing them more love and compassion since they are still developing. Another thing they mention is how we are facing our issues with our past childhood- not everyone had a damaging childhood so I don’t know why they talk so much about it. I was really looking forward to this book but I couldn’t get myself to read anymore.

I started reading this about 3 wks ago and have seen dramatic, positive change in my relationship w/ my 6 yr old daughter. This helped me identify where I could be better as a parent as far as controlling my own emotions, and how to help her work through her emotions in a positive way. I liked that it wasn't just conceptual, but gave very clear actions that I could implement. Really great for overcoming power struggles and control issues.

Amazon.com Review

If Barbie thinks math class is tough, what could she possibly think about math as a class of metaphorical thought? Cognitive scientists George Lakoff and Rafael Nuñez explore that theme in great depth in Where Mathematics Comes From: How the Embodied Mind Brings Mathematics into Being. This book is not for the faint of heart or those with an aversion to heavy abstraction--Lakoff and Nuñez pull no punches in their analysis of mathematical thinking. Their basic premise, that all of mathematics is derived from the metaphors we use to maneuver in the world around us, is easy enough to grasp, but following the reasoning requires a willingness to approach complex mathematical and linguistic concepts--a combination that is sure to alienate a fair number of readers. Those willing to brave its rigors will find Where Mathematics Comes From rewarding and profoundly thought-provoking. The heart of the book wrestles with the important concept of infinity and tries to explain how our limited experience in a seemingly finite world can lead to such a crazy idea. The authors know their math and their cognitive theory. While those who want their abstractions to reflect the real world rather than merely the insides of their skulls will have trouble reading while rolling their eyes, most readers will take to the new conception of mathematical thinking as a satisfying, if challenging, solution. --Rob Lightner

This is a clever application of metaphor -- one of the four master tropes, discussed by Kenneth Burke in his A Grammar of Motives -- to mathematical reasoning. But the three other tropes, namely Metonymy, Synecdoche, and Irony, have also been applied to theorem proving. Irony, for example, induces proof by contradiction, where one assumes that the contrary proposition is true, and then shows that the assumption leads to an inconsistency. A new version of the book, covering all master tropes, might usefully be considered by the authors.

I bought and read this book 4 years ago. The beginning of the book makes important statements about the "true nature" of mathematics. It is the perfect counterweight to the Platonic "universe of perfect forms" which some people think explains the source of mathematical meaning. Another philosophy of mathematics is the "mathematics in the universe" idea that the universe contains mathematics, and that's where we discover it from.In the Platonic view, mathematics is essentially completely disconnected from the physical world, but can be perceived by the mind. In the "math in the universe" view, it's "out there" outside the individual mind. The embodied mind viewpoint may be thought of as locating mathematics in the interface between individual minds and the universe around them. (Of course, there is no sharp boundary between individuals and their environments.)The essence of this book may be summarised by a single paragraph on page 9."Mathematics as we know it is human mathematics, a product of the human mind. Where does mathematics come from? It comes from us! We create it, but it is not arbitrary---not a mere historically contingent social construction. What makes mathematics nonarbitrary is that it uses the basic conceptual mechanisms of the embodied human mind as it has evolved in the real world. Mathematics is a product of the neural capacities of our brains, the nature of our bodies, our evolution, our environment, and our long social and cultural history."The rest of the book gives evidence for this claim and develops the consequences for some areas of mathematics. My favourite part of the book is the evidence for arithmetic in six-month-old human infants, using puppets, on pages 16-19. This shows clearly that some basic mathematics is not purely a matter of culture. It is innate.Chapters 2 to 11 present a series of "metaphors" and "schemas" for various mathematical concepts --- arithmetic, algebra, logic, sets, real numbers, infinity, transfinite numbers, infinitesimals. Initially it all seems quite plausible. Integers come from adding and removing objects from collections of objects. Real numbers come from measuring sticks. But the "metaphors" get less and less credible. My marginal notes pencilled in the margins changed from very positive to slightly positive, to lukewarm, to skeptical, to strong disagreement, to utter derision. My negative marginal notes started at page 91, concerning complex numbers interpreted as rotations. At page 108, my comments are "Huh?" and "infantile" and "Why not?". On pages 109 to 111, I commented "more nonsense", "unjustified conclusion", "nonsense", "total twaddle" and "nonsense".The metaphors are mostly like what are used to teach mathematics. In fact, a useful application of this book would be to mathematics teaching. That's what it seems like really.I do think that this is a very good book, but the authors could have said everything much better in 150 pages instead of 493 pages. After the first couple of chapters, the rest may be considered "metaphors for teaching mathematics". The first 4 chapters are well worth reading as an antidote to the Platonic "universe of forms" philosophy of mathematics. Modern mathematics is taught as if it were "analytic" truth, i.e. as absolute, universal truth which even life-forms in other galaxies would agree with. The fact that the basic concepts of mathematics are wired into the brain is very important. However, that is only the launch point for mathematics. The detailed content of modern mathematics cannot be mapped one-to-one with the "embodied mind".Maybe each individual component of mathematical thinking may be identified with innate capabilities of the human mind. But all cooking uses pretty much the same set of ingredients and the same set of techniques, and yet the art of great cooks cannot be reduced to mere ingredients and techniques. Painters all use the same colours, tools, concepts of perspective and composition etc., but that does not explain all of the art in the art galleries. The basic components of mathematical activity are indubitably in-born in the sensory/motor system of the human mind, but it is very doubtful that "cognitive science" (if it is indeed a science) can identify which mental process is being applied in each mathematical thinking-process. Probably each individual uses different innate brain functions to other individuals for the same mathematical concepts. For example, I use diagrams for almost all mathematics, whereas some mathematicians I have met say that they do all mathematics symbolically and algebraically without any visualisation. The "embodied mind" theory also does not explain how mathematicians at some points in history totally rejected concepts which at other times were accepted as self-evident. Examples are zero, negative numbers, irrational numbers, transcendental numbers, complex numbers, infinite sets, transfinite ordinal numbers and non-Euclidean geometry. The vicious debates between intuitionists and formalists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries show that even at one point in history, there can be strong disagreement on the most fundamental ideas of what constitutes mathematics. So it seems unlikely that the "embodied mind" theory can do explain anything more than the ingredients and utensils of mathematics. I cannot explain the recipes in the cookbooks.

Lakoff has pursued his thesis of cognitive metaphor as embodied structure that not only let's science into the discussion of body/mind unity, but can be applied fruitfully in a variety of disciplines. Beginning by working cognitive science into linguistics research, he has expanded inquiries into literature, mathematics, and politics all with powerful effect.I first read this book hoping it might give me some insight into how to discuss a variety of things with my brother who's study of math and physics has prevented him from imagining much value in poetry. The book marks a trail beginning with an inventory of cognitive science experiments that set the ground for basic math as cognitive metaphor, and leads to the heart warming jewel of mathematical beauty in Euler's equation. Quite the ride! When I shared it with my brother he was hooked.Obviously, we don't all think alike, but cognitive science has begun to shed light on the basic patterns of our variety and a shared mindfulness at the heart of being human. This book is an important indication of the power of that revelation which should be shared.

For as long as Western mathematics has been around, it has generally been viewed as having an existence independent of human experience, as belonging to a Platonic realm of forms and ideas. To make it embodied in the human psyche, as the authors attempt to do in this book, would be a sacrilege to many mathematicians. Such a move would deny the `eternal truth' of mathematics some would argue. But the last few decades have seen the rise of cognitive science, and this field has led to many interesting insights into the operation of mind and has demystified its status in the world. The authors though see cognitive science as being deficient in one respect: it has omitted the study of mathematical ideas from a cognitive perspective. There is no cognitive science of mathematics, they say, and hence they endeavor in the book to correct this deficiency. Such a project is definitely worth the effort, for mathematics has to be interpreted in the light of what is known about the mind, or as the authors put it, "it should study precise nature of clear mathematical intuitions". The book is very interesting to read, and the justifications for the assertions put forward by the authors are certainly the most optimal if viewed in the context of what is currently known in cognitive science. Further work must be done however, particularly in tying their ideas to the very intensive research in neuroscience that is being done at the present time. The prospect of having a science of mathematical thought is an exciting one. This book is the best that is currently available. The attitude of the authors is most refreshing, in that they not only show great enthusiasm throughout the book, but they are not nervous about discarding what they view as the "romance" of mathematics. They list several statements illustrating this "beautiful romance", such as the view that mathematics has an objective existence, which transcends the existence of human beings; or that human mathematics is merely a part of abstract, transcendent mathematics, and that reason is a form of mathematics. These romantic beliefs appear to be false, the authors say. Instead, they argue, the nature of mathematical ideas is that they are inherently metaphorical in nature. They give several examples of this in the first few pages of the book, with the rest of the book elaborating in great detail their reasons for asserting this. This is certainly an exciting time to be involved in mathematics, and assuming more evidence is accumulated that supports the authors opinions on the embodied nature of mathematics, it will be even more interesting to be engaged in mathematical research and in the teaching of mathematics. Mathematical thinking will then viewed as part of us, not some abstract collection of statements existing in some vaguely defined realm. Viewing mathematics as purely embodied may also give much more insight into teaching non-human machines how to do mathematics. This is the most exciting prospect of all.

Ian Bogost is both an progressive thinker and eloquent writer, and he applies them both to videogames in a way that is both academic and page-turning. The book is divided into discrete sections to which the procedural logics of videogames can be applied. He gives illustrative examples of what he means - examples that will just as often expand your mind about what future games can be as expand your conception of some older classics. The title of the book comes from the ability of this procedural logic to make implicit and explicit arguments to the player. Most people have a sense that it's the interactivity of videogames that makes them special, but Bogost takes it one step further by discussing "procedural rhetoric," a systemic form of persuasion. As you play such a game, the way its system responds to your input builds cause-effect relationships in your mind. These cause-effect relationships can easily make "claims" about how similar real-world systems work.Overall - excellent book. Very thought provoking and inspiring to the would-be game maker.

Read this for a course called "Writing about Video Games". Very thought provoking book. Highly recommend to anyone who likes to think beyond the surface of games and the gaming world.

I had to purchase this book for an English class where we discuss how we can use videogames to produce fiction, and also how to produce a videogame that is fiction, as well as how the two relate. From what we have covered so far it has really sparked my interest to pursue other literature in this category. Ian Bogost does a great job putting his thoughts out there, and it's been a great read so far.

This book rules. If you've ever thought to yourself (or screamed on the internet) about how videogames are as important or should be respected as much as other forms of art (painting, literature, film, etc.), then you should read this book. By describing and analyzing many examples of what he calls "persuasive games", Bogost clearly describes how games have already been used for expressive purposes by a variety of people. To me, one of the most interesting parts of this book is its implicit call for, or at least emphasis on, a cognitive or rational approach toward expressive game design (and possibly art making in general). Bogost describes games as procedural representations of how the world, or some part of it, works (which, of course, are in themselves processes). Because videogames run on computers and the very nature of computation requires explicit and exact specification, when representing with systems it can be said that one is creating a complete "theory" of what is being represented. The canonical example of a game representing an ideological position through its processes is SimCity. SimCity presents a world that takes for granted that various forms of governmental planning produce very specific results (which are literally hardcoded into the system). Players are placed in a role where zoning, etc. is unavoidable and naturalized. To be successful at the game, players must understand and then enact the rules of the system. Depending on the player's criticality, or how successful the game's procedural rhetoric is (a very important term explored in depth in this book), he or she may accept the solutions to the problems into his or her worldview.Bogost practically goes right out and admits that this approach to game design, whether taken intentionally or not, is propagandist. Though, a significant portion of the book is dedicated to describing a strategic mode of engagement for players to avoid blindly falling prey to procedural rhetoric. Part of this involves developing "procedurally literacy". This more or less means to be able to interpret systems or processes (a skill that no doubt has relevance in life in and outside of games). Next, he describes the "simulation gap" as the difference between one's existing ideas about something and the ideas that one believes the system to be representing. It is through awareness of what happens in this gap, or the dissonance created between the mental models (this shares many similarities with theories of dialectic/montage), that one avoids being blindly persuaded and instead learns/grows from a persuasive game. For example, because I am procedurally literate, my outrage at the "truths" presented in SimCity only strengthen my case against the state because it teaches me new things to be outraged about as I recognize where I disagree with what is presented or what passes for political reasoning (and for that I love and am indebted to SimCity!). A large portion of Persuasive Games is spent on how videogames, like SimCity, can be used as a way for citizens to express opinions, persuade and communicate about complicated processes. The product description really sums it up: "Videogames are both an expressive medium and a persuasive medium; they represent how real and imagined systems work, and they invite players to interact with those systems and form judgments about them." How can that not sound profound, or at least enticing? Humans live in systems. This is meaning of life kind of stuff! Though it may be dense to some non-academic readers, Persuasive Games is one of the best books out there that describes how videogames can uniquely express ideas that are central to the human experience and I fully recommend it.

Good stuff.

Bogost loses focus at times and seems to be nitpicky on many points, such as which video games are actually persuasive, but his term "procdural rhetoric" as he outlines it in chapter 1 is good food for thought for any rhetorician (whether studying video games or not).

Great theoretical book for who's looking for a practical way to relate video games and the literary/rhetorical tradition.

This is important work but god all mighty is it hard to get through. He's not the most gifted writer but he makes important points about the legitimacy of video games as an expressive and persuasive medium. It's worth a read if you can handle that it's written like a research paper.

Best dermatology book. Pictures very helpful. Beginning with differential dx based on body area fantastic. Exactly right amount of information for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

I am a FNP student and many of my preceptors use the pictures in this book to help them with skin differential diagnosis. I too have literally held the pictures up to a case and narrowed my differentials down. Derm diagnoses can be tough but this book makes it a lot easier. This is one book I won't sell back - I will be using this long after I graduate. Only regret is I have the full size book and wish I had the smaller paperback (my preceptor had) for ease of use.

Pretty good and quick resource for Derm when you are in clinic. Derm is always tough as Primary Care since you see so many random rashes.

It is really hard to navigate on the Kindle. If you are looking for something that is quick and easy to find and compare a derm condition in the clinical setting, this is not the method to use. I wasted $150 because I've never used it.

I have owned or used the various editions of Habif's Clinical Dermatology for over ten years in our general internal medicine practice and return to it again and again. I have also used a variety of other Dermatology books brought in by staff - typically the $60 - $80 range books. They are typically o.k. but nothing stands up to Habif and I recommending spending the extra $ for it (in the $125 range). The pictures are big, clear and of typical presentations, the layout logical, the review of basics up front helpful and thoughtfully presented. You will find that this is the one you reach for when you need help.

Very great book. Better than smaller Habif book.

Good Reference for Family Nurse practitioners. Also, recommended by my professor & dean.

Love it.

I have read several books and watched several video/DVD's on baseball instruction for Little Leaguers. So far, this is my favorite. Don't let the title fool you, this book isn't just about fixing specific problems, in the process it teaches the proper methods from start to finish, whether it be hitting, throwing/catching, pitching or fielding. Other books, DVD's, videos etc., teach proper methods, but they don't teach you how to recognize problems. This book does. This book points them out for you, like recognizing a tired pitcher. No Little League pitcher will tell the coach he's tired and needs to come out of the game, after reading this book, the coach will know. I compare all other books to this one. I constantly refer to this book for a reference.

I've been coaching Little League for over 13 years. I bought the book to help with some areas maybe that I might be over-looking in helping kids. This book is good for in-experienced coaches who are starting out. Probably coaches that have been coaching for more than two or three years the information in this book will be irrelvant.

Good book

If you are a baseball novice, or if you never played ball above the Little League level, this book may be of value to you as a coach. Otherwise, there is little here that will strike an experienced coach or player as new or insightful. In general, I've found that the books published by Little League Baseball for coaches aren't very helpful. In fact, the only book I've found on the subject that contains useful, practical advice is "Bean's About Baseball."

Most of the Little League coaches I have come across could probably find something to learn from this book. If you have a player who is stuggling with some part of his game, chances are some of what he or she is doing wrong is talked about in this book.I've used some of the drills described in the book, and for the most part they've helped. I wouldn't recommend this as your first book if you are new to coaching, but maybe as your second or third...

Totally cute, festive, and reusable. A nice gift for any hello kitty fan. My 4 yr old enjoyed it.

We bought this advent calendar for our 3-year old daughter. She really enjoyed opening all the flaps every day (although sometimes she would open more, and we had to push them down until the correct day). Super cute and bright - we really enjoyed it and will put it out again next December.

This advent calendar is so cute - I love the pop-up effect, and the fine glitter that covers the inside is a nice festive touch. I bought it for my 18-month old, though she's probably a bit too young to really appreciate it without tearing apart. Planning on reusing it next year too.

Really cute

My daughter was delighted with this Hello! Kitty advent calendar. We have done advent calendars in my family over the decades. It is delightful to see so many cute calendars coming along.

fun item!

Fun advent calendar. Doesn't lay flat though.

Love it
