Great book. It challenges the religious myths that keep Christians impoverished. This book surprised me. I thought that I was going to get some more spiritual quasi positive thinking stuff. But this is the most practical book on prosperity I have ever read that was written by a Christian.

The book had a lot of information but certain portions appeared twisted through interpretations. I doubt if I would recommend this book to anyone. Study to show thou self approved.

I think there are not enough book like this as if if money was bad and a taboo...and men and women of God couldn't have any.We see stories like the beggar and the rich who both died and ended up on two different places. The rich in torment and the beggar on Abraham laps being comforted... yet, there is one thing we don't talk about...Abraham was rich TOO!And what about James who doesn't talk too good about the rich (bad rich that is) and finish his letter with Job who ended up his life even more wealthier than when he started. We seem to miss the obvious and see only what we are conditioned to see.Love this book. It's full of sound biblical principles.

Rodney says:All Christians should read this book. It so powerful and informative. The Lord made us extraordinary, not ordinary. I will apply what I have learned in this book.

This Book has me really going places, it changed my entire outlook on life. From a Pastor point of view,God doesn't want his children to be poor. If a Pastor wants you to struggle and he's not helping you, thenhe the wrong one to listen to. I'm getting mine and much more because God said I can have as much money, wealth and blessing that my little heart desire, just through the bible scriptures these saying are true. I pray mygirls get the vision to become Prosperous and stay that way and blessed with goodness and remedies.

This was one of select few books I ordered recently from Amazon. I wanted sound Biblical principles along with wise advice and motivation. This book did not disappoint. Although Dr. Anderson repeats allot of financial points found in other books, he takes the time at the beginning of his book to make sure 'your head in in the right place'. People say fear can be a great motivator but I agree with Anderson that fear is a demotivator and freezes people in moving forward. There is no fear in in God.The book also gives some great ideas for budgeting, tithing, giving and investing and the reasons why.I highly recommend this book to people who are looking for a solid read away from the hype of some other writers.Kind Regards,Larry J Clark[...]

This book has totally transcended what I was taught growing up in church and from my family about money and God! The book could not have come to me at a better time. It exposes the lies we as Christians have adapted to over the years regarding faith and prosperity. The book has given me a clear direction for what true prosperity and wealth is, it's intent, and how to attain it. I'm passing the book on to all my family and friends. If you live by these principals I believe true wealth and riches in God will manifest here physically on the Earth.

I bought this book out of curiosity. I thought it was just another book that teaches,"name it and claim it" doctrine. But it is based on sound biblical principles. Setting goals is in the will of God. Joseph was an investor, and a wise investor. The notion that a christian must be poor is not of God but from the enemy. God wants us to be fruitful, wealthy. According to proverbs 13:22, " A good man leaves an inheritance for his children's children". How can that be if that person doesn't have an inheritance in the first place? You can't give what you don't have.I highly recommend this book for whoever wants to acquire knowledge. Buy this book as soon as you can and start reading it. I guarantee you it's going to change your financial life if you let it.

(The following comments were left by me on a review by someone who said their 7 year old loved the book. I am also posting this as a review of the book.) Sorry, but I would not let my 7 year old read this book. Too worrying. Homelessness, getting snatched up by scary guys and dragged away to a foster care group home and made to peel potatoes, etc? Not appropriate for such young kids. Scary stuff. I bought this for an 8 year old who has skipped to fourth grade, but after reading the book, I will not be giving it to her. This book is too heavy handed, tries too hard to beat a kid over the head with Einstein references to try to connect some dots which are not well explained, and introduces - while simultaneously glossing over - very scary subject matter. I think kids should be kids as long as possible, and I don’t want to introduce such frightening thoughts as homeless children with no idea who they are, or sinister organizations who kidnap kids and use them in think tanks for solving the world’s problems. I see that the authors are trying to push an agenda of kids being problem solvers, but this is an epic failure because of the sinister aspects involved. This is a NO for me. Definitely NOT for young children.

Overall, this was a suspenseful book with good ideas and a lively heroine. The authors shine beginning in Chapter 4 when the action starts to ramp up. They have their readers eager to find out about all the shadowy characters (the spy, the Corp), who Max’s parents were, and how the team will solve the problem of getting those poor kids out of the mines so they can go to school and have electricity in their homes. The friendships Max develops are heartwarming and the value of teamwork well portrayed. And, the authors bring in just the right power-hungry, local villains, even though, sadly, they are modeled after real-life villains. (I concur with the authors on using real-life problems; if we don’t acknowledge their existence, they will continue. Likewise, the authors use age-appropriate language.) And, just when the kids think they have the problem solved, it all comes crashing down. Yes, this is a page turner.I also commend the authors for finding many creative ways to bring Einstein’s ideas into the narrative, and subtly injecting new vocabulary words. Parents and teachers will appreciate this. Finally, while the authors left the door open for a sequel, they still left this reader feeling satisfied and even pleasantly surprised at the end. The quizzes, ideas, and end notes are quite helpful, too. However, I have some thoughts on what would possibly have improved the reading experience. There were times when I felt that I was being bombarded with much too much about Einstein. Sometimes less is more. I also had trouble understanding what was going on the first few chapters because there weren’t enough clues in the narrative as to where Max lived and what her situation was. And, initially it looked like an all-science story, but it's actually so much more. I eventually caught on, but I hope young readers will persist until they reach the fourth chapter where more is revealed. Also, there is a map showing the trip to Israel, but what about the location of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where much of the action takes place? The illustrations are good, but the placement of the picture of the wizard announcing who is selected as project leader should not have preceded the actual announcement in the narrative, nor should it have been right in the middle of Max’s interview for the position - a dead giveaway. Finally, when a fiction or science fiction book is heavy on actual science, it would be helpful for the authors to include explanatory notes at the end on the status of current science for budding young scientists. For instance, do actual wind turbines have solar panels on them today, or is this under development? My Google searches showed many sites saying it had been tried but the panels were too heavy for the turbines, the rotation of the blades reduced the potential for capturing sunlight, and there are many hybrids now where the solar panels are mounted on the post holding up the turbine blades. So, if solar panels on turbine blades are being developed and are already being used, tell us, please. Curiosity. And, what about the possibility of airplanes flying remotely? Yes, we have drones and we are already in a semi-autonomous society …but what’s the status of airplanes today? Pilots use autopilot already, but can they leave the cockpit? FYI, many children’s books include a science consultant.

My 8yo is an avid reader. Finding appropriate and engaging books for him has been a challenge. He could not put this book down. On day 5, after his normal lights out time, he came downstairs to say "Dad! Go on to Amazon.com right now and give this book a 5 star review. I loved it!" So there is his "its past your bedtime" review.Thank you for giving this Dad a hero moment. :D

I purchased this for my 7 year and she absolutely loved this book. She finished it in one night, and she's referring it to her friends.

I found the story in this book to be very interesting and also has many words of wisdom for young people to remember. Very well written and holds your interest at every turn. I hope he collaborates and writes more of these books. Thank you

Purchased this book for 10 year old girl who loves to read (she would read like 7-8 books at a time). She finished this book in 2 hours. I thought Max was a boy. Turns out it’s a girl. This was a perfect book for my daughter who loves Albert Einstein, and wants to become a scientist when she grows up. She can’t wait for the second book to come out. Highly recommended by my daughter!

Loved this book it had a female hero who used her intelligence to solve problems. Plus I learned so much about Albert Einstein and other other physicists. Great book.

Bought this for my grandson for Christmas. Hope he likes it - I do!

Review

Praise for Imagine Me Gone:"Haslett is one of the country's most talented writers, equipped with a sixth sense for characterization and a limber, unpretentious style. Perhaps his rarest gift is the apprehension of the invisible connections that tie people together...The chapters seamlessly negotiate the passage of time...[Oldest son] Michael comes to dominate the narrative, and Haslett perfectly captures the qualities that make him both seductive and infuriating. He is a motormouth with a fitful imagination and a wicked sense of humor; his nervous energy and 'ceaseless brain' are the battery power on which the whole family runs...Haslett is alert to the reality of others, and the insinuating power of this novel comes from its framing of mental illness as a family affair. Michael's siblings are both wholly convincing characters, shaped by the abiding question of how much, or how little, they are meant to act as their brother's keepers...Most affecting of all is Margaret, who is treated with impatience by her children but possesses a capacious understanding...'What do you fear when you fear everything?' Michael wonders. 'Time passing and not passing. Death and life....This being the condition itself: the relentless need to escape a moment that never ends.' That condition, Haslett's superb novel shows, is an irreducible part of the fabric of Michael's family, as true and defining as the love that binds them."―Sam Sacks, Wall Street Journal"Ambitious and stirring . . . With Imagine Me Gone, Haslett has reached another level, affording readers a full and luminous depiction of a mind under siege . . . By putting the readers in the same position as [oldest son] Michael's family members, Haslett has pulled off something of a brilliant trick: We feel precisely what they feel-the frustration, the protectiveness, the hope and fear and, yes, the obligation. If Michael is on the page, if his thoughts or actions are laid bare, there's a grueling sense of dread. If he's out of sight, if his thinking and whereabouts are unknown, the dread becomes all but unbearable . . . This is a book refreshingly replete with surprise. It sneaks up on you with dark and winning humor, poignant tenderness, and sentences so astute that they lift the spirit even when they're awfully, awfully sad . . . But make no mistake, the novel's most rewarding surprise is its heart. Again and again, the characters subtly assert that despite the expense of empathy and the predictable disappointment of love, our tendency to care for one another is warranted . . . Even when it's difficult or terrifying or impossible, especially when it's impossible, the impulse to calm those we hold dear is an absolute privilege."―Bret Anthony Johnston, New York Times Book Review"Imagine Me Gone brilliantly captures the excruciating burden of love and the role it plays in both our survival and our destruction. Haslett suspends a sense of dread over you like an anvil from page one, cutting the rope that holds it in the brutal last act. You'd be a fool to look away." ―Julia Black, Esquire"A richly drawn, Franzenesque canvas . . . Haslett's prose shimmers as he peers unflinchingly at the risks and rewards of fighting for love."―O, The Oprah Magazine"A devastating family drama . . . Haslett's considerable skills as a writer turn domestic conflicts into something more profound . . . In one beautifully rendered scene after another, Haslett shows the family dealing with John's illness and Michael's descent while also managing their own conflicts . . . Imagine Me Gone is a handsome work . . . the sort of writing that is guaranteed to turn heads."―Michael Magras, Miami Herald"Searing . . . Devastating and gorgeously written . . . Pure genius . . . Haslett hits the nail on the head when it comes to describing just how anguishing and time-consuming psychiatric disorders can be, not only for the afflicted but also for the flailing loved ones trying their damnedest-and failing-to find a suitable fix . . . Haslett writes with his eyes wide open about the pitfalls of piled-on medication, the panicked late-night phone calls, the cycles of fear, frustration, and guarded hope. And herein lies the kicker: Because these chapters are told from the alternating perspective of each of the five family members, we believe every word in them and bear witness to just how complex and multi-angled the issue of mental illness can be . . . By signing on with Haslett and his characters we are given the chance to look beyond our minutiae and daily distractions in order to notice the passage of time as experienced by others. We are reminded of what it is like to be truly, if fleetingly, alive."―Alexis Burling, San Francisco Chronicle"Powerful . . . Imagine Me Gone is a study of destructive family dynamics akin to Christina Stead's The Man Who Loved Children or Paul Theroux's The Mosquito Coast. Family here is a trap as filled with love and concern as it is with exasperation and dread. Moving with penetrating wit between the points of view of a father, mother, daughter, and two sons, the novel traces how the vein of mental illness running through this family affects every member . . . Haslett, as he turns the narrative over to first one and then the other, is uncanny in nailing how their differences in personality and temperament guide their respective actions . . . His sharp take on how minor family foibles become conflated with major family dysfunction introduces some unexpected comedy into the proceedings . . . Haslett expertly evokes family behavioral patterns that simply repeat themselves, taxing everyone's patience, before precipitating into panic-inducing crises . . . With its fugue of voices, each contributing a vital slant to the action, Imagine Me Gone offers rigorous formal pleasures. Yet while flirting with narrative artifice, Haslett stays keenly aware that in this family there is no explanation 'sufficient to account for the events . . . Lives weren't works of art.' In acknowledging that, Imagine Me Gone respects the mystery of how things happen the way they happen, while brilliantly conjuring the tide-like pull with which dreaded possibilities become harsh inevitability."―Michael Upchurch, Boston Globe"Drawing vivid scenes and compelling characters from a tragic realism, Haslett intimately connects the reader to his characters' inner lives . . . A rare, complex story [with] exceptional storytelling and poignant insights [and] uplifting moments of humor, kindness, and love."―Don Oldenburg, USA Today"An extraordinary blend of precision, beauty, and tenderness . . . Haslett's prose rises to the challenge, lushly capturing the dense fog of depression that blankets John [the father] and occasionally lifts just enough to reveal the 'beast' moving in on him. But Haslett really shows his chops channeling [oldest son] Michael's amped-up voice . . . I got caught up in the beauty of Haslett's sentences and the lives of these oh-so-human people bound by shared duress and cycles of hope. Haslett's signature achievement in Imagine Me Gone is to temper the harrowing with the humorous while keeping a steady bead on the pathos. You want sympathetic characters? You want a narrative that showcases love as a many-splendored thing capacious enough to encompass stalwart, long-suffering spouses, loyal siblings, suffocatingly obsessive crushes, and casual, noncommittal relationships (both gay and straight) that morph as if by magic into soul-sustenance? You want writing that thrums with anguish and compassion? It's all here."―Heller McAlpin, NPR"Smart and polyphonic...Haslett is that rare writer whose art can console without ceasing to be art."―Boris Kachka, New York

Mental illness is a demon that relentlessly haunts the sufferer whilst also laying waste to all those they love. Or, at least, it has the potential to do so. Often the people who care for the mentally ill are deeply affected in ways they rarely realize. It impacts their relationship with the sufferer as well as the relationships they develop outside of their family. In "Imagine Me Gone" by Adam Haslett, we get to see how Michael’s mental illness (and that of his father) impacts all of the members of his family, as well as the few true friends he makes over the years. This is not a light read. It isn’t a pleasant feel-good book, nor is it uplifting or particularly optimistic. It doesn’t really show how bad things can get with mental illness, but it gives a very realistic view into some of the trials and tribulations of all those who are touched by it. It certainly gets bad enough. And I appreciate that it wasn’t an over-dramatization of the worst case scenario, but instead, perhaps an introspective look at the more usual scenario. As a society, we bury and ignore and shame mental illness and those suffering from it. Without any direct experience, we can’t begin to fathom what their lives, or the lives of their families, might be like. For some reason, we cannot accept the idea that the mind can be broken in ways that are difficult, sometimes even impossible, to fix. Either we are terrified by the possibilities (this could happen to me or my child!) or we are apathetic and lack understanding (they are weak, they aren’t trying hard enough). Either way, we need more books like this. We need more education and exposure and understanding. We need to be talking about it because so many people are affected by mental health issues, a great deal more than we realize because so many hide, out of shame or lack of understanding. You may think you don’t know anyone with mental illness (just like you probably think you don’t know anyone who has been sexually assaulted), but you most likely do. They just don’t talk about it. They manage it, or mismanage it, silently. Without support. But I digress…back to the actual book. It was very well written. With each chapter, we are offered the perspective of someone else in the family, volleying back and forth between father, mother, Michael, and each of his siblings. Normally, I’m not a fan of this multiple-narrator approach, but it serves a very important purpose in this case. Because we need to see how one person’s illness impacts all those involved. And what a fantastic job Haslett does of developing each individual voice, of telling the whole story.Mental illness is complex and the impacts are broadly sweeping. We are all impacted by those who suffer with debilitating mental disorders, and as a society, we need to learn more and do better.A heavy read, but a must read.

I love multi-narrative stories about families, but I’m growing tired of reading books about privileged upper-class people and their “problems” (looking at you, The Nest). Thankfully, Imagine Me Gone avoids these tiresome cliches, presenting a powerful account of a nuanced family plagued by mental illness.Margaret meets John in the 1960s and, in spite of his recently being hospitalized for depression, decides to go through with her plans to marry him. They go on to have three children, and it becomes clear early on that Michael, their oldest, is following in his father’s footsteps.Told in alternating points of view by the five family members, Imagine Me Gone provides substantial insight into the painful legacy mental illness can cast onto a family: each character feels real and worthy of our empathy. Most memorable are Michael’s chapters, which are laugh-out-loud funny and sometimes even written in the form of a parody — a poignant reminder that humor is often utilized as a reliable outlet for relentless inner anguish.Haslett may be one of the most talented and capable writers to tackle the heavy topic of mental illness since David Foster Wallace. In fact, I found myself thinking frequently of a quote from Infinite Jest: “Sarcasm and jokes were often the bottle which clinical depressives sent out their most plangent screams for someone to care and help them.”For this one family, everything comes to revolve around John and Michael, illustrating one of the novel’s main theses: for better or worse, we’re destined to bear the pain of those around us. Is there a way to cope with that reality while still managing to maintain a fulfilling life?Powerful, moving, hilarious and devastating, Imagine Me Gone is a haunting, sophisticated, gorgeous work of fiction.
