I'm not just a romance reader! I love history and I really enjoyed this book. I looked up the Barbary pirates online and found a timetable to follow. The book went into more detail that I found very interesting. The United States had barely won their independence from England, when their sailing vessels, trading in the Mediterranean Sea were attacked by pirates from Tunisia, Morocco, & Tripoli (Libya,) The ships and crew members were seized and the men were forced into hard labor. The pirates asked for ransoms to be paid. After he became president, Thomas Jefferson, did not want to pay ransom. He was able to convince congress to build armed Navy ships to protect the trading vessels in the Mediterranean countries. There were two wars and America proved to Europe that they could defend themselves against the pirates and again after they won the battle against Great Britain during the war of 1812. It was after that war that they finally defeated the pirates for good.

This is a summary and analysis of the Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger book, Thomas Jefferson and the Tripoli Pirates: The Forgotten War That Changed American History. This conflict, one of America's first as a fledgling independent nation, has been called America's first war on terror. Barbary pirates had taken to capturing sea vessels, disrupting trade, and enslaving seafarers and demanding a peace price to leave those ships alone (for ever decreasing periods of time at ever increasing prices) and ransom (at ever increasing prices) for the sailors. Europe's developed nations paid them off, but Jefferson knew that could not stand. After winning support at home, he built up a small but effective navy, and through it won a victory that established America's reputation as a strong nation able to defend itself and its interests abroad.The main points discussed are:1. The war with Tripoli, while often overlooked, was important in establishing America's reputation as a nation able to defend itself. This was especially critical so soon after the revolution as it warned European powers not to try to try to take over the states and turn them back into colonies.2. The pirates captured us ships and sailors, mistreating and sometimes killing them, for both ransom and for religious leaders. The US sailors were primarily Christian. The pirates were primarily Muslim. The two groups have a long history of animosity.3. Pirates disrupted and sometimes completely halted trade in the area, trade that was critical for the US to repay its revolutionary war debts and build its own economy. Some nations paid for safe passage, for as long as the pirates chose to grant it, but the US would not be able, nor willing, to keep that up for long.4. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson disagreed on how to handle the pirates. Adams argues for peace. Jefferson for war. The points both made are fairly well laid out in this excerpt.5. The naval fleet, while small, was effective largely due to good leadership. This book does not spend much time on clashes or tactics, it being a small summary, but it does cover some of the more important leaders involved, such as Edward Preble.6. This conflict, over sea and over land via Egypt, served as a proving ground for the US. Again, specific battles are not detailed, but the efforts of William Eaton are discussed at length. He was a very interesting figure, and I plan to read more about him in particular.7. Data was kept carefully classified until ready to be acted upon. Actions against a captured US vessel or to install a new Tripoli leader were kept secret for many reasons. The excerpt author notes that "the incident has not made the pages of many history books, landing the plan in pseudo secrecy once again".8. At some points in the conflict, leadership proved ineffective due to intrinsic or extrinsic factors. Captain Richard Valentine Morris, for example, is discussed at length.I am of the opinion that history ought to be taught first from a high level, to get a sense of all the major events in broad brush strokes, just to get one's bearings. Then come down to this level, skimming quickly over the entirety of US history, or whatever history you're studying. Then get into the weeds with the details of major events. Most schools start in the weeds and students struggle to get perspective. I would recommend anyone interested in learning more about American history, or for parents who have children starting to study American history, gather up a good collection short works like these and go through them in chronological order.One of the things I most appreciate about these guides, especially in this work, is that the last section explains the author's credentials in the subject area.I received a sample in exchange for an honest review.

This is a readable account of the individuals and circumstances concerning the fledgling United States and the Barbary pirates. Engrossing narrative moves you through the years of frustrations and ineptitude of our early navy. Although my impression had been that the Marines had a major role in subduing the Mediterranean pirates, Kilmeade minimizes their contribution. Since the Marine hymn memorializes the Marine role - "From The Halls of Montezuma To The Shores of Tripoli" I had the impression there was more Marine action than portrayed in the book. Indeed, diplomacy was the primary focus, enforced by meaningful shows of force by our increasing and formidable naval forces.This book is worth your attention if you are interested in U.S. history, our early Federal governing body, Thomas Jefferson, et.al, and the beginning and subsequent growth of our Naval presence on the world scene.

The book the little girl after God’s own heart doesn’t capture, in its cover and inside cover page, the symbolism that was captured in the book the little boy after God’s own heart. Otherwise the two books do parallel each other well.

I actually ended up buying two of these. One was for a 6 year old’s birthday and the other was for my newborn niece to read to her as she gets older. The pages are beautiful and full of godly lessons. I strongly recommend for any little girl being raised to follow after God!

What a beautifully written book for little girls. My 2 year old daughter loves this and asks for the "kitty" book every night. There are 3 white cats throughout the book. This book instills biblical principles at such a young age. So glad to have this treasure as it will be one that I save for my granddaughter some day.

I love the intent of this book and try to read it to my daughters every chance I get. The only reason I give it 4 rather than 5 stars is because this isn't a book my kids pick themselves often. The phrasing is very simple but there are some things that can get confusing for younger kids. I can't remember exactly what it said but the page teaching them to follow through with their promises really lost both my almost 4 year old and my 5.5 year old. They understand the idea but the wording wasn't the best. I think both my kids and I were expecting more of a story, this book isn't a story. It's simple prayers and a cute phrase to go with the attribute.

I love Elizabeth George's books for children. I was introduced to her books when someone gave me, "God's Wisdom for Little Girls: Virtues and Fun From Proverbs 31". I loved reading this to my little girl. It is full of scripture and encouragement for growing in Godly attributes. This book focuses on the fruits of the spirit. I am looking forward to adding this to my daughters collection this Christmas. I highly recommend this book.

As one who loves the Bible studies of Elizabeth George, I purchased this book for my granddaughters, who are bi-racial. The writing was examplary, as I anticipated. The drawings are gorgeous - if the book is a gift to blond, curly-haired little ones. Their were few children of any other race, too few fo give the book to my grandbabies and still honor their heritage. I did give the book to our nieces, and the Lord may have intended it for their use all along - His time will tell. If you are purchasing this book for children who are bi-racial or of another race, it may not be the best book for them due to the drawings, although beautiful. While I would like to give this gorgeous book a perfect rating, my hesitation is only due to the drawings and the very few children included who are not caucasian. God will use this book mightily, I believe - and even moreso with the presence of more children of other races.

Excellent in every way. Quality, size & based on Gal. 5:22,23. Great gift for my fiesty grandaughter. Lol

I chose this rating because this carefully crafted and heartfelt book is a real gem. It would be wonderful even without words because the pictures, referred to as paintings, are exquisite. Elizabeth George's book teaches little girls about the fruit of the Spirit and what that's meant to look like in their lives. It teaches them some valuable lessons that can last a lifetime.

When I was born, my great-grandmother wrote a letter to Dear Abby asking for the recommendation of a good story book to read to me. Dear Abby suggested "Ping." I still have the original clipping from the Dallas Morning News!! I remember LOVING to hear the story being read to me. I bought a copy for my kids when they were babies, now that I have a granddaughter of my own, of course I bought it to read to her. I still love the rhythm of the book and its gentle illustrations.I don't know what parents today would make of its plot, given that there is a "smack" given to the last duck up the ramp at the end of each day. Ping hates the smack, hates that it hurts and hates that it marks him as "last" every day. One day he doesn't go home because he's last and doesn't want the smack. On his own, he encounters adventure, grave danger, makes a friend, and finds his way home again, realizing that smack isn't the worst thing that could happen to a duckling who strays beyond the boundaries.

I enjoyed reading Ping as a child. It tells an exciting story of a young duck thrust into a huge (and often scary) world by his hasty decisions.I love the artwork in this book. It has a (not unexpected) far eastern feel, which really enhances the sense of wonder and adventure. It is neither patronizing nor a caricature of Asian culture, which probably betrays the period in which is was written (As an adult, I would have expected the latter based on its publication date, and the former if it was written today).The real winner here is the narrative. It treats a young reader with honesty and respect. Ping's actions may make sense in the short term, but have long term ramifications as the story unfolds. It shows a child real life consequences and that admitting your faults can be the best way to go. The story may lack the themes of heroism and non-conformity that dominate today's literature for children, but that is what makes Ping so special. Highly recommended!

My niece in-law has suggested that people invited to her baby shower give a favorite childhood book instead of buying a greeting card. This is such a great idea because you can write your sentiments on the inside cover of the book and Mom and baby will have the book and sentiments forever. The Story About Ping is one of my most favorite childhood stories and I am excited to share it with the new little grand niece or nephew. The book arrived on time and in perfect shape - no problems with shipping or packaging.

This is a classic that I remember very fondly from my childhood. I still have the original hardbound book, and I got this paperback version for a friend. I was rather disappointed to find that the colors in the lovely illustrations are washed out. Particularly the blues. All the nice, saturated blues in the original are rendered as pastel bluish-white. Among other things this makes the night scene illustration look like day, and it doesn't really help the rest of the illustrations. I can't imagine why they couldn't do better.

I read this book as a kid and am now buying it for the grand kids. I could relate to trying to escape getting spanked! Loved it then, love it now.

I purchased this book for my first grandchild when he was born. It was the same story that I read to his father when he was very little and wanted him to share the same experience. My son's eyes shown and he smiled when he opened the box, saying that he remembered the story and me reading to him when he was a child. It brought back fond memories.

Our daughter used to love for us to read "The Story About Ping" to her at bedtime. We never minded reading it over and over to her because it has all the elements of great drama, just enough humor, timeless lessons about life and wonderful illustrations.In 2010, Nashville experienced what was labeled as a "500 year flood". Our basement looked like a shipwreck when the water went down. It was humbling to us when we realized after the shock was over that the basement, so full of things we had thought were important, was actually so full of things for which we had no need, and in many cases, no desire. Yes, there were a few things we thought we would miss at the time, but we honestly do not even remember most of them.The only lost items that have turned out to mean a hill of beans to us were the collection of childhood books we used to read to our daughter. Ping is the first of those books I have sought to replace. I intend to replace many more as I find them, then one day to box them, wrap them with Christmas paper and present them to her. Perhaps when her first child has his/her first Christmas. Yep, sounds like a plan.

I loved this book as a kid and keep referring to people as "Ping" when they are the last one and hurrying to catch up. I wish more people had read this book, too, as a kid so they would know what the heck I was talking about! Lol! Oh, well, it's a lovely storey. I wish I had gotten it in the hard cover, oops on my side.

About the Author

I was born and grew up in the north of England. At the age of eighteen I went to Lancaster University where I studied philosophy and anthropology, primarily studying tribal (shamanic) cultures. After graduating I found there were not many jobs in that field! So, I worked for a few years in a hospital, teaching sign language, and in my spare time studied complementary medicine, various spiritual traditions, and psychotherapy. I set up in private practice as a complementary medical practitioner and psychotherapist in the early 1980s. Apart from a few years heading up a counselling department at a Further Education college, I have been self-employed as a therapist ever since. As well as one-to-one client work, I have also been a teacher, trainer, and supervisor for nearly thirty years. I had several intense shamanic experiences in my early life, although at the time I did not know what to call them. At university, I was drawn to studying shamanic cultures, although at the time the word 'shamanism' was still not used that often in academic circles (at the time they were generally still referred to as 'primitive cultures'). I first consciously come across shamanism in my 20s, attending workshops that various teachers were running at the time. Although I found it interesting, I was also training as a psychotherapist at the same time, and I found the lack of ethics and abuse of power that I saw going on in the shamanic workshops to be disturbing. So, I gave up actively pursuing it (although with hindsight it never actually left me). In my 30s, a series of events completely took me apart mentally, emotionally and spiritually, and literally nearly killed me. It was during the slow process of emerging from that crisis that shamanism burst back into my awareness. Over the next few years of healing, shamanism felt like a very private part of my life; an intensely private practice just between me and my guides, and something I discussed with very few people. Although I was a teacher, the idea of teaching shamanism felt out of the question at that time, as shamanism felt like something that I would always only be a beginner at. Again, with hindsight, I certainly would have been nowhere near capable of teaching it, really teaching it, at the time. It was not until my early-forties that my guides started to nag me about teaching it. I resisted for years. My guides persisted, and quite reluctantly I began to weave bits of shamanic work into the other teaching that I was comfortable with. What astonished me was the way some people took to it and thirsted for more of it. It did though, take another near-death experience for me to finally give in, and stop being the reluctant teacher. These days I am filled daily with a deep gratitude (and still with some astonishment) that I can devote my life to practising and teaching shamanism, and that people want to learn with me. Otherwise, I lead a quiet life. A couple of years ago my partner and I were fortunate enough to be able to move to North Wales, to live a life more in contact with nature. I am an introvert, and after teaching I need a lot of solitude and quiet to re-charge. I spend most of my days writing, walking on the beach or in the hills, watching clouds and sunsets, gardening, cooking for my partner, holding her hand, reading, researching on the internet (there is so much I still want to learn and study!), thinking, feeling, occasionally wrestling inner demons, doing nothing in particular, talking to my guides, and gazing adoringly at my cat. While I’ve been interested in Shamanism for nearly 15 years, I had not learned much about it. I have developed a regular yoga practice and have meditated regularly over the last 2 years. I consider myself an intuitive and sensitive to energies in general. I note these things because I believe it will put the following into perspective:Before I picked up The Shamanic Journey, I started trying to work in my Akashic records but found it challenging and after a few attempts was gently “told” to come back after I had unfolded the layers of my heart. A few days later I found this book and downloaded a sample and then purchased the ebook. In it I learned why I was having diffulty in the Akashic. (The Akashic is akin to the shamanic upper world.)The author explains very clearly the purpose and differences between the shamanic lower, upper, and middle worlds. He strongly recommends gaining lower world experience, knowledge, AND spirit guides before exploring the upper world. He gives very good instruction on how to access the lower world and while I find visualization and journeying in my mind challenging in general, I have been able to access the lower world no problem and have already found animal guides and worked with other animals in that realm as well. I record my sessions and talk about what I’m seeing and experiencing so that I can stay present in the journey and not worry about forgetting something. Afterwards, I replay the recording and take notes. They’ve been wonderful experiences so far and I look forward to his other books!Two small notes: there are several typos (repeat words mostly) and he does hop on a soapbox for a chapter or two, but his perspective on these things is needed in the world today, especially if we’re to find our way out of it. Blessed journeying to all of you!

Interdependent, balancing, broadening, healthy, AND practical.Supports blending the best of shamanism and psychotherapy. References other's foundational works, but is not at all pedantic reading. Includes Bibliography of further study. Discusses relevant historical, modern, prehistorical agricultural, and hunter-gatherer societies. Brings together in one place much of what i have learned over the years regarding rewilding, takers and leavers, grounding in nature, etc. Covers a broad variety of 'basic' shamanic practices. Offers exercises that are flexible guides, not restrictive guided visualizations.I am excited about, and can't wait for ;) , the 2nd book covering lower world nature-oriented 'Mother Earth' journeys, coming into print soon (late 2017). Looking forward to the 3rd book in this series covering upper world ethical and spiritual 'Father Sun' journeys, due to come into print Spring 2018. Paul Francis explains why the lower and upper worlds are free of dangers, and how to recognize the dangers that bleed in from our ordinary middle world. Paul Francis gives a grounded, step by step approach and addresses many common pitfalls.Even more exciting are his insights and sharings about the place of shamanism in history and the current world.Well worth your time and money. Can't wait for the next volume!

I thoroughly enjoyed this text. It explains in careful detail the entire process without leaving you confused. The writing style is light and humorous making it enjoyable and engaging. The text also provides deep knowledge that can help you transform your life to one that is more empowered. The author is an expert at making sure the reader understands the entire process and is never overwhelmed. It also allows the reader to learn not to be to harsh with oneself, as the author explains that people experience the methods differently and should not be impatient if they receive different results. He encourages taking your time and developing your own talents. I plan to purchase all of his books.

Fabulous intro to modern shamanism. I do feel the author throws you into practicing a little too fast, with a little too many options (all the different journeys). The middle passage about psychopaths is SPOT ON. So glad to hear someone else talking about this serious issue. Lots of great break downs of how it all works, terminology and history. Definitely recommended for those interested in spirituality without organized religion. Take the journeying at your own pace though. Don't feel you have to journey before proceeding with the rest of the book.

This book was written with the student in mind , very practical teachings. He describes the dos and dont's of shamanic journeying , ethics to follow,etc.

I started thoroughly enjoying the author's approach to this material - his experience may or may not match yours, take what works. He addresses his efforts to address and avoid cultural appropriation and biases; wonderful.However the text itself is loaded with biases and experiences presented as a measure for the reader to evaluate his or her own experience; dogmatic.I would not recommend this text to the uncritical reader or to the initiate.This isn't to say there is not material in here worth reading. I enjoyed the discussion around techniques, just not the measure of what is or is not a valid reader experience.

I thought it integrated both Shamanism and Psychotherapy very well and extremely honestly. I would recommend it particularly for those looking to understand the psycho-therapeutic aspects of Shamanism. I'm wondering where he second book is, since it appears that it was supposed to be out in 2017. Too bad--I was looking forward to the subject matter.

I'm finding errors in many of the code snippets starting in the first chapter. I've had to verify syntax on multiple occasions against the Ansible documentation. Even the first lab where you install nginx with a simple web page failed, with many of the tasks out of order in my opinion.I would recommend a place where we could download the "working" code to verify if its just a typo in the book or a change in how Ansible is expecting its syntax. I'd love to chat with the author directly and provide my feedback to improve the product overall.

YAML is a crime against humanity, but this book clearly explains how it works with ansible. The way ansible pulls many disparate files into one "play" is hideously difficult to debug, but the book makes it "clear". Yay, I suppose.

Read the first 3 chapters so far. Will written, good read. Great for the guy like me that likes to learn with a linearly arranged set of doc. hate hopping around web docs.

I am new to Ansible and I really enjoyed the first four chapters. They were easy to follow along with and seemed to build upon one another. Chapter 5 takes a u-turn and following along becomes a chore. I learn by actively participating but the examples are just fragments from chapter 5 forward and many of the complete examples do not work. It will probably make a good reference book but as a learning tool I am underwhelmed.

I bought this book on the strength of the O'Reilley "up and running" branding of the excellent book "Terraform: Up and Running". This book is a hodge-podge of terminal captures, half-baked methodologies, frequent defense of the tool's weaknesses and iterative re-writing of the previous edition, which the author acknowledges in the forward, even going so far to say that he mixes the first-person tense of the previous edition with the collaborative editing of the current edition. 'for clarity'..... what?This book DOES NOT DESERVE O'Reilly branding and badly needs a technical editor who knows what they're doing. I don't doubt the author is a master of Ansible, but this book simply sucks.

The index in this book is terrible. There are so many important, everyday Ansible keywords that are missing. As a reference guide, a solid index is key. That said, reading this I did pick up some Ansible tips that I would not otherwise have known.

The book, "Ansible Up and Running" might be fantastic, but I'll never know. O'Reilly appears to have printed "Network Security Through Data Analysis" and placed the Ansible Up and Running cover on it.

I love this cross stitch book! Her design literally jump off the page!! Her colors are wonderful- the charts are very large and easy to read- the only problem you will have is picking which one to start with!!!

I own many cross stitch books and this is by far one of the most beautiful. Her designs are so gorgeous. The colors she uses on her designs are so rich they are a joy to look at. The charts are BIG and in color!!! That makes it so much easier when doing counted cross stitch. The pictures of the designs themselves are actually big enough that you could almost work from them and not the chart!! That is saying a lot! I highly recommend this book if you love beautiful patterns.

Bought 1 and 2 for my 10 year old grandson who wants to learn to cook. The quality of the cookbook is very nice with laminated pages and very colorful pictures. Recipes are pretty basic but with new names to coincide with the Star Wars title. An adult should be present when reading through these recipes and determining which steps are safe for kids to do and which the adult should take care of. For instance, the hash browns, required placing a plate on top of a hot skillet and flipping over! Definitely too dangerous for a kid and even some adults depending on the pan size used.

I thought the name of the recipes was really creative and funny but the some of the recipes were random and it didn't have a flow like most cookbooks. It is pretty fun though, neat addition to the cookbook collection.

I bought this cookbook and its prequal "Wookie Cookies..." for my sister who is a big Star Wars fan. Her reaction alone when she opened them Christmas morning was worth the cost of the books. It was by far the star present of the day. As she paged through the books reading the punny recipe names and looking at the photos, she was laughing so hard she was crying, which made the rest of us, who are not Star Wars geeks, laugh so hard our stomachs hurt. Each recipe is paired with a photo of the completed recipe used as a prop in a scene with elaborate backgrounds and miniature figurines, and they are impressively well done! And hilarious!! Clearly a lot of loving effort was put in to creating it. The books themselves are good quality, and the finished recipes that I've tasted have been pretty tasty too. Perfect for a Star Wars fan who likes to cook, or even one who only cooks rarely - you don't have to be experienced to follow the recipes.

Grandson loved it. A great birthday gift for a 7 year old.

This is a great little cookbook. It is choked full of colored pictures and fun recipes. Fun! Fun! Fun! The recipes look easy to make and most don't require hard-to-find or unusual ingredients. It was also at a great used price. Nice Darth Mall template included.

Purchased as a gift for my son. Christmas is still a week away so I'm looking forward to seeing his reaction. I looked at the recipes before wrapping the cookbook and they seem easy and yummy. Any Star Wars lover would like to add this to a collection.

Bought this for my nephew for Christmas and he took back to his dorm and cooked for his friends. The recipes are surprisingly good and the names are hysterical...laminated pages are also a nice touch. If you have a starwars fan that also likes to cook I highly recommend this item.

No real insights as to how or why anything happened, but an AMAZINGLY fascinating read. My key takeaway here is that maybe sometimes it's better to die early from rare and aggressive cancer than to live to see the monster you've created! If crazy stories of art, corporate corruption, sneaky marketing, and terrible people are your thing, read this! But the most important thread through it all is a reminder that some people really are in this for the art, Innovation, and fun. Through the stories of terrible people, the stories of excellence and excellent people shine like bright diamonds.

The author posits himself somewhere between wannabe cool-dad and basic Wall Street bro, leaving for dry commentary that reads more like a laundry list of business deals than an anything else. I was revolted and outraged by his condescending read on the interaction between Kelly Clarkson, and her then-producer Dr. Luke, who has since been outted as a predator to women in the music industry. Randomly there are parts about his mom playing piano. There's some interesting information in here, but I found his take in general to be lacking in imagination and wonder.

A very long magazine article which seems to find deep themes in what properly are unrelated or coincidental events. For example, Dr. Martin, a Swedish producer, responsible for an extraordinary number of hits and this is apparently evidence that the "new way" of making a hit record (with a genesis in Sweden) has removed or diminished risk in the record factory and elevated a particular formula for success. But the opposite seems also true: Martin is prodigious because he is a prodigy: as Geffen and King were to Brill so perhaps is Martin to pop. The book seemed a bit long on padded detail and I felt the facts were being squeezed to fit a theme or conclusion that the author had in mind. Shorter and pacier with mot so much New Yorker-esque larger meanings and there would be a good book here. As it was - great idea though - it was a really rather boring read.

Superbly written and researched, this book is a wonderful addition to the modern music literature. The writer, for the first time ever, goes deep into the hitherto hidden and little known industry behind the music hits to reveal the often surprising and shocking truths. We all know that the industry has evolved since the 80s and 90s but these changes are little known to outsiders. There has been seismic changes in terms of the music industry structure, the balance of power and in the music production that were kept hidden from the general public and the fans.Reading this book will open your eyes wide and you'll never see or hear a hit song the same way again.

This book is a truly excellent overview of the current "hit factory" behind today's pop music. In all of this: history, movements, immediate affects, and some juicy stories, it's fantastic.What it isn't, really, is deeply insightful into what all this means for music as an art-form, nor for artists themselves. Each time an insight comes ('it's noticeable that Taylor Swifts 1989 is her first album that could have been sung by anyone') it passes without any real reflection on this. What does this mean? How does an artist speak in this factory and is it even possible?Were genuine artists ever speaking in popular music? Presumably so. What made those times so different? Was it just album sales? Etc...Also, there is really only a passing mention of what it all means for actual musicians. Of course there's the standard "this is dying" stuff - but how are people adapting? What possibilities are there? And look, are any of these guys even good musicians? Dr Luke's utterly laughable analysis of a melody: Is that really the height of what the creatives know about music? It doesn't seem so, but then there's this final thing that isn't analyses:None of these people - not the singers, not the labels, not the producers - are actually trying to make good music. They are trying to make "hot products" that will by nature flare up temporarily and then make way for the next thing. This is the opposite of an artist, isn't it?So, while really enjoying this book, I wish there had been a lot more along these lines...

This is a GREAT read that displays the phony music industry for the evil empire that it actually is!Explains why everything today sounds the same & exactly how music when from being a cultural force to being dumbed down to a sleek packaged product. Basically lip synching super models that have NO redeeming talent whatsoever!This book reveals just why no one really cares about music anymore!

One of my favorite books in the past few years. Seabrook dives deep into modern pop songwriting, which reflects a production line more than the mythic writer with a guitar and notepad. You don't have to love current pop music to love this book, but you are sure to come out of reading this with eyes open to the talents of these craftspeople. Along the way are terrific profiles of pop geniuses known (Max Martin) and relatively unknown (Deniz Pop's key role in the Swedish pop machine is made clear throughout the book). Read it.

I found the storyline incredibly interesting. The author compiles various interviews from different sources as well as personal interviews. While reading, it was sometimes difficult to follow who he was talking about since he called the same person different names. Also, there were chapters which ended leading up to a climax that you thought you'd continue into the next chapter, but then the author would switch stories only to come back 2-3 chapters later.Overall I did enjoy the book and recommend it as a read for anyone interested in the music business.
