I've read three of James Markert and liked them all, but I think this is the best one yet! I loved it. It brought me to tears. It made me think. The characters are memorable and touched this reader. I love the history that is included in this book, the geography. It takes place mostly in Southern California, but the history of it and very important scenes take place in Italy. And Italy and the Greek/Roman Myths of gods and goddesses are interwoven into the story of Robert and Magdalena and Jubo; of Vittorio and Valerie and William; of Vittorio with his parents; of Vittorio with John and Vittorio's own children. I love the hope that is in this book. I love the transformation that happens in Robert and Vittorio and John and the hotel's guest. I love the flashbacks from Vittorio and Valerie's childhoods. I love Jubo and I wish Jubo would have stayed for Valerie (and for us readers -- sorry, that is kind of a spoiler). These characters and the story will stay with me. I wish there was a place called Tuscany Hotel. If there was I'd be making plans to stay there, maybe even try to live and work there. Thank you Author James Markert for this beautiful story.
The first book I read by James Markert was What Blooms from Dust, which I liked very much. As in that book, Midnight at the Tuscany Hotel, is an intriguing combination of mystery and fantasy, while spotlighting family relationships, particularly the one between the lead character Vitto, a WWII veteran and painter, and his father Robert, a renowned sculptor and the builder and proprietor of the Tuscany Hotel. In its glory days the hotel hosted famous artists, actors, and so on, but after having been closed for some years, it has now reopened as a home for those with memory impairment because the water in the fountain is apparently providing treatment. What results is a cast of characters that the reader might grow to care about, and the revelation of past history and secrets. I really appreciate this author's skill at description, dialogue, and weaving a story that makes one question what quality of life and sacrifice is all about.
Midnight at the Tuscany Hotel by James Markert is a fantasy story woven with strong Greek mythological ties. I'm not into Greek mythology and its glorifying of false gods. From a Christian standpoint, it really rubs me the wrong way. The story itself was hard to get into and while most books take me just a couple days to read, this one took over a week. It didn't keep my attention. I finished it an hour ago and really can't even remember the names of the main characters. It's just not my thing I guess.
