First, let me freely admit I have not been to Panama. I have friends that enjoyed visiting Panama so much they visited twice, and even know someone from Panama. Hence, I was interested in learning more about Panama and possibly planning a future trip there. As such, I will not be able to verify any street maps, if the selection of hotels and restaurants given is fair, and so forth. What I like about the National Geographic Traveler guides is the in-depth articles about nature, culture, and art, as well as the glossy photographs that entice the reader. They covered all parts of the country, not only the capital region and popular areas. They even covered the Darien Gap, long considered a dangerous region that few people visited. I don't know if the Darien Gap is safer now, but it speaks to the full coverage of this book that tourism there is also covered. This travel guide is great for learning if you want to visit Panama, what the places are to visit, and where you might want to go within the country as you plan an itinerary. Then you would probably combine that with some internet research for up-to-date rates and reviews on hotels, since a travel guidebook can no longer compete with the up-to-date nature of today's travel websites. So, I think National GEographic has made the right play with this book, going for the deep coverage of the country over a list of hotels.
I purchased three Panama books and this is by far the best and most descriptive for a tourist. I like that there are many photos and maps within the book and the many locations covered are very detailed. I also purchased the National Geographic Map https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1566952603/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_24 and it is very detailed as well. Probably no better book and map to be found!
Compared to the Lonely Planet books, I do not like it.It does not have a good map from the different Cities in Panama and everything is great eventhough many "sights" are quite boring. It can only provide a small overview what you can see, but in my opinion only scratch the surface of what you can do in Panama City.
Purchased this book prior to my trip to Panama. Great information to cover prior to a visit. It was current and up to date. Short chapters of categorized information in an easy to read format.
I love national geographic but found this guide book to be lacking. It really doesn't give you the basics which I needed but rather focused on the sites. This is a good supplemental book but not a stand alone guide.
Always use the National Geographic Traveler books- content is very good, practical and photos are excellent
Used it
This travel book is definitely more nature-focused, so I suppose it's good for that purpose. I was hoping for a more broad view of things to do and see, including contemporary sites, restaurants, bars, etc.
